Course Switch

Having trouble in a STEM course? Here is a way to save your GPA, save money and stay on track to graduate in four years.

An Alternative to Struggling in STEM

One of the challenges some students face early in their college career is finding the right academic fit. Historical data show that many students who earn lower than C- on their first STEM test(s) too often go on to fail or drop the course(s) — but there is a better option!

Course Switch gives students the opportunity to transfer to non-STEM major courses in math, chemistry and computer science mid-semester. It is a great way to save your GPA and get on the road to finding the right academic fit.

How does Course Switch work?

If a student is failing one or more of the designated courses after the first exams, they will be contacted and invited to consider Course Switch. Even students who are not getting D or F grades are welcome to consider the program. After consulting with your academic advisor, you get to decide if Course Switch is right for you.

Students who elect to participate in Course Switch will be allowed to drop the designated classes and add non-major sections of the courses. Switching classes as part of the Course Switch program will not count toward the 6 Q Drop Limit.

How do I participate?

Meet with your advisor before the deadline to discuss and decide if Course Switch is best for you. If so, you will fill out a commitment form to move forward in the process.

Please make sure to meet with your advisor to complete the commitment form on Docusign before the deadline and join the new Course Switch classes.

I just submitted my course switch commitment form. Do I need to keep going to my current classes?

No. Once you sign your Course Switch commitment form you can stop attending your current class that you plan on switching out of (e.g. CH 301, M 408C, etc.) and stop working on any assignments for the class. Once the Office of the Registrar processes your official switch, your current class will be deleted from your course schedule and the new mid-semester class will be added to your schedule.

I just switched from CH 301 to CH 301N. Do I also need to drop my CH 104M lab?

No. Students are allowed to remain in their CH 104M lab while enrolled in the new CH 301N course switch class during the fall semester. Should the CH 301N class time conflict with the CH 104M lab, please discuss alternative options with your academic advisor.
