Computing, Sciences, Math at UT Among Best in U.S. for Graduate Study
In 2026-2027 rankings, all UT computer science programs rank in the top 10, while math and more are in the top tier.
The University of Texas at Austin remains one of the top public universities for computing, science and mathematics, according to the latest edition of “Best Graduate Schools” from U.S. News & World Report.
With this latest update, the College of Natural Sciences at UT has 11 graduate programs or specializations currently ranked in the top 10. Statistics, the program housed in the newest department in the college, continues to rise in the rankings, as do other offerings with longstanding strengths at UT, such as mathematics and artificial intelligence.
Not all specializations and programs were newly ranked this year, as the magazine produces rankings in some categories less frequently. All programs and specializations within computer science were ranked and placed in the top 10 this year. Earlier years’ rankings put specializations spanning from mathematics to the life sciences to the physical sciences also in the top 10.
U.S. News & World Report’s graduate rankings, which are published separately from the magazine’s yearly ranking of undergraduate programs, are based on surveys of academic leaders and, for select programs, involve additional quantitative measures such as student/faculty ratios and research expenditures.
This year the disciplines in the College of Natural Sciences that were updated included all specializations within computer science and the overall areas of computer science, physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics. UT Austin graduate programs and specialties within Natural Sciences that U.S. News & World Report currently ranks in the top 30 follow.
