General Information
Outside employment is defined as any activity such as, but not necessarily limited to, consulting, advising, testing or assaying, performing analyses or examinations, the practice of one's profession, or similar work performed in addition to the official responsibilities of a full-time university employee. Most outside employment includes compensation, but some volunteer activities may also be included.
Engagement in such outside professional activities is limited to 8 hours per week, with some stipulations. For more information, please see the Guidelines for Prior Approval and Disclosures of Outside Activities and Financial Interests.
Faculty outside employment requests should be submitted for approval at the beginning of each new fiscal year. Faculty requesting outside employment approval should follow the steps outlined below:
- Get written approval for the outside employment from the Department Chair.
- Complete pre-approval for outside activities request via UTRMS portal.
- Email CNS Faculty Affairs Staff (cc Department Chair) with a copy of the Department Chair approval and email confirmation from UTRMS that the outside activity is clear of conflict of interest.
Approval from the Department Chair and Dean is required for all outside employment requests per HOP 2-2220. For Instructions on submitting an outside activities request through the UTRMS system, please click here.
