About
Retired faculty members may be rehired into their previously held position under modified service if the service of the individual will result in a significant benefit to the University. Modified service appointments are without tenure. For faculty who retired under TRS, modified service appointments can be for no more than one-half time. TRS retirees must also observe one full, calendar-month break in service after their effective retirement date to avoid revoking their retirement. For faculty who retired under ORP, there is no cap in hours and faculty may return to work on the first of the month following retirement.
Modified service appointments cannot exceed one academic year and must be terminated at the end of the appointment period. However, modified service appointments can be renewed in writing for successive terms of one academic year if the University determines that it is of significant benefit.
For more information on modified service, please see the HOP 2-2420 on Retirement and Modified Service for Faculty Members.
Process
Requesting Modified Service
A faculty member who wishes to be considered for appointment to modified service should submit a request in writing to their Department Chair during the academic year in which he or she has decided to retire. If the Chair agrees with the request, they will send a brief letter to the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs. This letter should include the reason for the request, the date span and requested percent time of the appointment, and how the request would provide significant benefits to the University.
Appointment Processing in Workday
If the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, in consultation with the Dean, approves the modified service request, the department administrative staff will issue the faculty member a short-term, temporary contract using the Modified Service offer letter template.
Once the contract has been signed by all parties, the department will rehire the faculty member in Workday following the Modified Service Workday Guide.
After the modified service appointment has concluded, the departmental administrative staff must process the Termination in Workday effective the last day of the contract.
