About Harold Zakon

Dr. Harold Zakon is a professor of Neuroscience at UT Austin. He earned his Ph.D. in Neurobiology & Behavior from Cornell University in 1981 and joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in 1983. Dr. Zakon’s research focuses on ion channels, key proteins that allow nerve cells to communicate. His lab studies how sodium and potassium channels function, how hormones like testosterone and estrogen regulate them and how the genes for these proteins evolved in vertebrates. His work combines molecular biology, neuroscience and evolutionary biology.
