News & Tips
All PHY 102M/N, 103M/N, and 117M/N Labs have been replaced by a single series: PHY 105M/N.
- To streamline course availability, students will be able to take PHY 105M/N to pair with one of the following lower-division physics sequences - PHY 302K/L, PHY 317K/L, or PHY 303K/L - in order to fulfill degree or pre-health requirements.
SUMMER/FALL REGISTRATION STARTS APRIL 19, 2021:
- MPA majors must clear advising bars before registration!
- Step 1: Complete the on-line advising worksheet or make an appointment with your advisor via simplicity (new!)
- Step 2:
- Astronomy majors must make an appointment with an AST Faculty Advisor.
- Physics should make an appointment with the PHY Faculty Advisor if they have not yet met Dr. Sitz, have any questions, or just want to make contact with him for any reason.
- Math majors can make an appointment with a Math Faculty advisor by sending an email. Some reasons why a student may want to see a Math Faculty Advisor include assistance with course sequencing, credit evaluation, questions about substitutions, graduate school preparation, and certificate issues.
UT MATH ASSESSMENT DUE DATE FOR SUMMER 21 IS:
- June 2, 2021 11:59pm.
- UTMA scores obtained before Feb. 4, 2021 are no longer valid and must be retaken.
UT MATH ASSESSMENT DUE DATE FOR FALL 21 IS:
- August 23, 2021 11:59pm.
- UTMA scores obtained before Feb. 4, 2021 are no longer valid and must be retaken.
Q-DROPS, PASS/FAIL CHANGES, & WITHDRAWS FOR FALl 20 and SPRING 21:
If you would like to discuss the drop or pass/fail or CPFE you are considering before deciding whether or not to proceed, schedule an appointment with your advisor.
- Standard Pass/Fail:
- Deadline to request a Standard pass/fail is April 5, 2021 5:00pm.
- Courses taken on a pass/fail basis will only count as elective credit. You may change the grade status of a course one time. In general, no more than 16 semester hours taken on the pass/fail basis may be counted toward the Bachelor of Arts, Plan I. No more than six semester hours taken on the pass/fail basis may be counted toward the Bachelor of Science and Arts degree and the Bachelor of Science degrees. You can take no more than 2 courses on a pass/fail basis in 1 semester. If you are an undergraduate student, in order to take a course pass/fail, you must have completed 30 or more credit hours. Talk with your Academic Advisor, if you have any questions.
- Grade Status Change requests (to pass/fail or letter grade) should be submitted online here.
- Q-drop or Withdraw changes:
- Deadline to request a Q-drop or to withdraw is May 11, 2021 5:00pm.
- For the Spring 2021 semester, all Q-drops will be considered “non-academic,” which allows students to drop a class without counting toward the six-class limit.
- Additionally, note that Q-drops may have an impact on scholastic status, financial aid, veteran’s education benefits, athletic eligibility, as well as other implications.
- If you are going to withdraw, the CNS Student Division staff will contact you to schedule a short appointment with a non-academic counselor. This is required prior to a Withdrawal being processed
- International students seeking a Withdrawal must meet with a non-academic counselor prior to May 7th, 2021.
- If you would like to drop a course or withdraw, submit your request here.
- COVID-19 Pass/Fail Exceptions (CPFE):
- Beginning January 6, 2021, and continuing through May 28, 2021 5:00pm, undergraduate students may choose to have a total of three (3) classes graded on a Pass/Fail basis without penalty.
- These exceptions are new and in addition to the standard Pass/Fail option.
- The total of three (3) COVID-19 Pass/Fail exceptions apply only to the fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters.
- You will be able to view your final grades prior to making a decision to take these exceptions. Although you can submit a request for the COVID-19 Pass/Fail Exception prior to viewing your final grades, it may be advisable you wait until after the spring 2021 semester and before May 28, 2021, so that you can make the best decision to optimize your three conversions over both semesters.
Selecting to convert a course to a COVID-19 Pass/Fail is not a requirement; it is a choice and an opportunity for you to use if it is helpful. - Using a COVID-19 Pass/Fail Exception on courses that already count toward degree requirements will allow your class to continue to count toward degree and course requirements, where a standard Pass/Fail may not.
- Standard Pass/Fail options remain available to you.
- FAQs are available with more detailed information.
- Once you have a made a COVID-19 Pass/Fail exception it cannot be reversed. If you need assistance, contact your advisor or cnsinfo@austin.utexas.edu. You may submit a COVID-19 Pass/Fail Exception online. Your request will be updated on your student record immediately.
PHYsics SUNDAY NITE STUDY SESSIONS:
- Sundays 6-8pm on Discord.
Physics CoacHing sessions:
- The Physics Department is offering virtual coaching sessions throughout the semester. If you need any additional assistance with physics courses, don't hesitate to attend a session. Please find the schedule and Zoom links here.
M 427J:
- M 427J is a differential equations which replaced M 427K beginning in Fall 2015. It is called Differential Equations with Linear Algebra and differs from M 427K in that several weeks of the course are devoted to linear algebra and the course covers systems of linear differential equations thoroughly.
