The Bachelor or Science and Arts (BSA) degree is a new cross-disciplinary degree for College of Natural Sciences students, particularly those interested in combining a core science experience with course work in the fine arts, liberal arts, communications, or business.

The BSA degree was born out of student interest and has been carefully crafted to satisfy the career goals of an increasingly diverse college.


The BSA fits within the standard 120 hour degree structure, and won’t add time to students degrees.


The BSA has flexible courses and electives which allow students to explore.


By having a minor, the BSA allows students to have “one foot in another college,” and not just in Liberal Arts but in Communications, Business, Fine Arts, or any of the other colleges.

We have called it the Bachelor of Science and Arts (BSA), where arts are to be understood in the broadest sense: the imaginative, creative, and nonscientific branches of knowledge considered collectively, especially as studied academically.

The BSA has three important components:

  • Satisfaction of the non-science University Core (30 hrs of non-science courses such as government and history)
  • 48 hours of science and math (12 hrs satisfies the university science core )
  • 12 hours of cross-disciplinary work.
  • 15-18 hours of cross-disciplinary coursework must be devoted to earning a minor degree or a certificate. Examples include pursuing 15 hrs of anthropology, linguistics, foreign language, economics, etc. Examples of certificates include the pre-health education certificate, business foundations certificate, communications certificate, and many more.
  • Students will also be able to work with their advisors to craft their own interdisciplinary minor through programs such as the bridging disciplines certificate or the evidence and inquiry certificate.

University Core 30 This includes UGS 302 or 303. The remaining 12 hours of core math and science are included in the major requirements below.
Language, Arts & Culture 12 Twelve hours selected from across at least two of the following four areas. Eligible courses in each area are defined by course prefix.

I. Fine Arts:  ART, DES, ENS, FA, MUS, TD, VAS, & Performance (instrument courses)

II. Humanities:  AHC, AMS, ARH, CC, CL, E, HMN, PHL, RS, & RHE

III. Social & Behavioral Sciences:  ANT, ECO, GRG, GOV, HIS, LIN, PSY, & SOC

IV.  Foreign Language and Culture:  Foreign Language/Foreign Culture lists
Students who elect to pursue a foreign language must minimally complete a one-year competency.

Courses used to satisfy this requirement may not be used to satisfy other degree requirements, such as the university core or the minor.

Minor or Certificate 15-18 Students select and complete either (a) a university-approved 18-hr certificate or (b) a 15-hr minor in a single course of study in a college other than Natural Sciences, Geosciences, and Engineering. 

Courses used to satisfy the minor or certificate may not be used to satisfy the language, arts and culture requirement above.  They may count toward the UT core.  

Students are eligible to earn any certificate offered on campus except those that require more than 3 hours in the major field of study for their degree.  (e.g., Biology majors cannot earn certificates that require more than 3 hours of BIO coursework).

Free Electives 12-15 Students have four to five free elective courses.

Honors Major (additional requirements for any BSA major)

To be eligible, students must be accepted into either Health Science Scholars or Polymathic Scholars honors programs. In addition to the requirements for the major, students seeking the honors major must also complete:

  • UGS 303 Originality in the Arts and Sciences
  • A minimum of six hours of honors-level math or science
  • A capstone course (NSC 371)
  • A minimum 3.5 UT GPA
