The Things You Carry

Dear students,

Walking around campus I have seen several of you wearing your backpacks, your face masks and your "I voted" stickers, too. So many of you are staying safe, participating in public life, and working hard. Some of you have let me know in our recent survey that you are doing all of these things while also balancing a lot in your courses and outside of school. So, first, let me say again: You are doing a lot. And it hasn't gone unnoticed.

I want to thank those of you who took the survey, letting me know what's challenging, as well as what's working out. I've been sharing your input with faculty and staff to help all of us adjust this semester and plan better for the spring. Several of you mentioned faculty members who are supporting you in these difficult times by keeping in touch and checking in on your learning. It's a model I encouraged my colleagues across the faculty to look to.

Just as we want all faculty to be compassionate and flexible, we want you to be compassionate with yourself, too. So take stock of what you've accomplished. Write down a few things you have managed and learned so far. And tell yourself, as you would a friend: You know what? You've got this.

Best,
Dr. Vanden Bout
