From the College of Natural Sciences

Take a break

Dear Students,

Last week brought a leadership change in the college that I want to make you all aware of. I stepped into a new role on a temporary basis as Interim Dean of the College of Natural Sciences. Back in August, Dean Linda Hicke announced that this academic year would be her last, and last week she stepped down from her post. I expect that her permanent replacement will be hired soon, but in the meantime, you can call me Dean Vanden Bout. (And, yes, you may have already called me Dean Vanden Bout, since I am also the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education.)

We appreciate all that Dean Hicke has done and wish her well as she gets some well-deserved rest before beginning a new job in Maine this summer.

Speaking of rest, spring break is next week, but don't start your relaxation quite yet. There is still a full week ahead. Dig deep and keep pushing through on those exams, readings, and assignments that are due this week. Even better, are there things due the week after spring break? Get a head start on those now so you can enjoy the break even more.

And while you're on vacation, take some time to reflect. The second half of the semester is a challenging one, so use the week off to talk to people about the amazing things you're doing. What excites you? What are you passionate about? What are you most looking forward to? College can be tough, but the hard work is completely worth it.

Press on and have a great week. Rejuvenate next week. Be safe. We'll be here when you get back.

Best,
Dr. (or Dean) Vanden Bout
