Ebola Expert Speaks on Efforts to Fight Epidemic

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, delivered his talk "The Ebola Outbreak: The Perfect Storm" at The University of Texas at Austin on Monday, February 9. Watch video from the event at Time Warner Cable News.

Fauci noted that Ebola cases in West Africa have been declining over the past few weeks, but are still a cause for concern.

"We can't rest, as long as there is even one case of Ebola out there."

He said that those who die from Ebola infection often die from the side effects of dehydration. Meanwhile, those who receive modern medical interventions early enough often survive. He said that feature of the disease means we have a fighting chance.

"I believe we will eventually get an Ebola vaccine because when people get good care, their bodies usually mount a strong immunological response."

Fauci's talk was the inaugural symposium hosted by the university's Center for Infectious Disease.
