Students have many reasons to join the Freshman Research Initiative. Check out a few of the reasons below!
Work at the cutting edge of modern science with the latest equipment and technology. Contribute to the world’s store of knowledge in areas like artificial intelligence, pharmaceutical development, nanotechnology, and the physics of white dwarf stars.
Get full course credit for doing research. It’s no longer the case that laboratory research takes time away from your courses. The lab is where you take your courses.
FRI students are more likely to graduate on time and earn the science or math degree they came to UT planning to receive. Learn the skills and methods of scientific research. Finish your stint in the FRI and then join another lab or become a mentor to incoming FRI students.
Form long-lasting friendships with other FRI students and support each other as you learn together. Teach and learn from peers, as well as from mentors who have recently been through the FRI experience.
Work with your professor on original research that matters deeply to him or her. As you help faculty advance their research projects, you get to know one another well which is a solid foundation for future letters of recommendation!
Increase your chances of getting into graduate programs, business school, law school, and medical school. Make connections to industry. Build relationships with university faculty.
Publish in professional journals. Present posters at conferences. Work in industry internships. Receive fellowships and grants.
See what it’s like to be a professional scientist. Have your world rocked by the thrill of discovery. Decide who you want to be.
