About
Funding for Partner Hires
Partner or dual-career hires are a two-way split between the Provost’s Office and the primary partner's CSU, and require the partners to be hired into either separate departments or separate colleges. The percentage of the split for salary coverage and length of coverage (for non-tenure track dual career partners/spouses) vary based on both the primary partner's and the dual-career partner's tenure status. Also, if approved, the dual-career partner will not count towards the secondary CSU's hiring plan.
In most cases, once dual-career funding has been approved, the Provost's Office will cover two-thirds of the academic rate and the primary partner's CSU will cover the remaining one-third of the academic rate. In cases where the dual career partner is being offered a tenured position, the Provost's Office will cover the entire academic rate. For tenure-track and tenured dual career partners, this arrangement will continue until they no longer hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at UT Austin. For non-tenure track dual career partners, this arrangement is for a maximum of three years, after which the academic rate must be covered by the secondary CSU.
Process
Step 1: Collecting CVs
The primary partner's hiring department should request the dual-career partner's CV.
Step 2: Review Process
The primary partner's Department Chair must discuss the potential partner hire with both the Department Chair of the secondary CSU as well as the CNS Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. This may require the secondary CSU to conduct an interview with the dual-career candidate as well as hold a faculty vote. Requests for dual-career funding cannot move forward if it's determined that the secondary CSU is not a good fit for the dual-career partner.
Step 3: Submit Request to the Provost's Office
If both departments agree to move forward with the dual-career hire, the primary partner's Department Chair should send CNS Faculty Affairs a copy of the dual-career partner's CV as well as a short paragraph on their research, teaching, and service accomplishments. CNS Faculty Affairs will then submit the dual-career funding proposal to the Provost's Office for review.
Step 4: Create PAR
If approved by the Provost's Office, each department can move forward with creating a PAR for their respective hire. Please see below for information that should be included in both partners' PARs.
Prior Approval Requests (PAR)
The Primary Partner’s PAR
The primary partner's PAR should include information on the partner hire in the comments (section 8), including their name, department, rank, and when the partner hire was approved by the Provost's Office.
The Dual-Career Partner’s PAR
The dual-career partner's PAR should include a job posting waiver with all appropriate documentation. In the PAR's comments (section 8), the department should include the name, rank, and department of the primary partner as well as when the partner hire was approved by the Provost's Office.
Section 2 of the PAR should include any faculty salary funding commitments made by the primary college/department, as well as those made from the Provost’s Office in support of the partner hire.
