Open Mentoring™ is a Web-based tool that facilitates the mentoring process, making it easy for you to volunteer and participate as a mentee. Open Mentoring™ will enable you to:
  • Connect with one or more mentors who have expertise from which you can benefit
  • Clearly define the boundaries of your commitment (time/energy) to your mentor(s)
  • Negotiate expectations of the mentoring relationship
  • Manage mentoring activities and maintain focus
  • Manage accountability with mentors

Open Mentoring™ Resources for Mentees

The Learning Resources listed below are available on the mentoring homepage.  Review them as time permits to learn more about your role as a mentee.

  • Mentee Guide: This self-paced workbook provides a wealth of information on being a mentee.
  • A Benefits guide will further explore the value of mentoring.
  • Getting Started:  Step by Step Instructions- Click on Getting Started from the Open Mentoring home page to access a video that describes the Open Mentoring process.  Step by step instructions are provided detailing how to complete the user profile.
  • Mentee: Characteristics Survey – Take this survey to find out if you have what it takes to be an effective mentee. This readiness assessment describes effective and ineffective mentee characteristics, and then allows you to measure your own aptitude against these characteristics.
  • Mentee: Learning Needs Survey – Take this survey to find out what areas of development would best suit your learning needs. This readiness assessment describes multiple learning needs areas for which you rate your effectiveness. This helps you pinpoint areas of development on which you can focus your mentoring efforts.

Who Can Be a Mentee?
CNS encourages all of its undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows to participate as mentees in Open Mentoring™.   Women and underrepresented populations in particular are highly encouraged to participate since the corresponding student populations continually list "role models" as one of their greatest needs in making a connection to their major and prospective careers.
