Software

This page will help you install software on your computer needed to watch lectures. You only need to do this once on a given computer.

media players

To view the recorded lectures, you will use a program called a media player that came with your computer.  If you are using an Apple computer, the program is QuickTime.  If you are using a Windows PC, you may use Windows Media Player, QuickTime, or RealPlayer - whichever you have on your system.  If you're not sure which media player you have on your Windows PC, you will find out when you install the plug-in below.

If your media player has been deleted from your computer or if your computer is several years old and you have never updated your media player, see the "installing or updating your media player" instructions below.

downloading and installing the plug-in

Regardless of which media player you use, you will need to download and install a "plug-in" called the EnvivioTV MPEG-4 Plug-in. The University of Texas has licensed this plug-in for use by its students and faculty.

Depending on the type of computer you have, click on one of the links below.  (Note that Apple moved from PowerPC processors to Intel processors during 2006.  Click on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your screen and select "About This Mac" to see which processor you have.)  The process of installing software is different on a  PC and a Mac, and we assume you know how to install software on your computer.

When the installer runs, you will have to click through several windows of information and accept the license agreement.

On a Windows PC, you will be told which media players were found on your computer.  We recommend that you install the plug-in for all the media players found.  After the installation is complete, an EnvivioTV Preferences window will appear.  If several media players were found on your computer, you can choose which one you want to use to view the lectures.

Note that you can download and install the plug-in multiple times and nothing bad will happen.

installing or updating your media player  (optional)

If you have not updated your media player in the last year or if you experience problems viewing the recorded lectures, it's a good idea to download the latest version of a media player. Here are links to the web sites:

All you need is the free, basic version of a media player. You do NOT need to purchase a "Pro" or "Plus" version.  If you're not sure which media player to install, you might start with QuickTime if you have a Mac or with Windows Media Player if you have a PC.

choosing your default media player  (advanced)

If you have more than one media player installed on your computer, they may "fight" with each other over which player is launched when you click on a lecture.  If you install/uninstall different players, you may even get into a situation where nothing happens when you click on a lecture.  Here's the easiest way we've found to select which media player is used to view the lectures:  Double click on the EnvivioTV icon (on a Windows computer, it is located in the Control Panel folder).  Under the Information tab, you will see three Restore buttons. Click on the Restore button for the media player you wish to use.  Make sure you choose a media player that is installed on your computer.
