Porter is building entrepreneurship programs to better connect students and faculty to how science shapes industry and creates wealth. He is pioneering efforts to add an entrepreneurship component to all freshman critical-thinking and Freshman Research Initiative (FRI) courses. At the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, Porter is spearheading the national search for a new chair of the Department of Marine Science and director for the institute. Porter held the Regent's chair as university professor at the University of Oklahoma. He is now professor emeritus of electrical engineering at OU where he served as vice president for technology development and dean of the College of Engineering. He was president of the Houston Advanced Research Center from 1985-1998.
