About the College Mark

The College of Natural Sciences mark, or "logo," is based on the mathematical concept of the Golden Ratio and Golden Spiral, which are represented throughout nature and the arts. The golden spiral can be seen in the swirling arms of galaxies and hurricanes, the whorls of flowers, the spirals in many shells, and in many other phenomena. The golden spiral was chosen for inspiration because its ubiquity mirrors the College of Natural Sciences broad areas of study, from mathematics to biology and astronomy.

More on the golden spiral.

The college mark is not a perfect golden spiral, but a modified abstraction.

Because print and online materials are the first contact that many people have with the college, it's important that these materials identify the college in a consistent way.

The following guidelines apply to all communications from the Dean's Office in the College of Natural Sciences. Departments and organized research units within the college are encouraged to use the college logo to identify their association with the college. We have discontinued the use of the college "seal."

Using the Mark and Wordmark

The mark should rarely be used without the wordmark or some other college identifier (e.g. the college URL, cns.utexas.edu). The wordmark, however, can be used without the mark. Please remember that the college is part of the larger university. In general, only the endorsed logo (with the words The University of Texas at Austin) should be used (UT visual guidelines).
