The Freshman Research Initiative offers first year students the opportunity to initiate and engage in authentic research experiences in chemistry, biochemistry, nanotechnology, molecular biology and computer sciences while being supported and mentored by faculty and graduate students.

Students emerging from this program, which spans three semesters of integrated coursework and laboratory research (in newly renovated, dedicated research labs), will have experimental techniques, lab experience, publications, letters of recommendation, and a deep understanding of the scientific process.

They will be ideally situated to:

  • Join a research group for the rest of their undergraduate time
  • Find a job
  • Get into graduate school
  • Have a lifelong career in the sciences

Chemistry professor Eric Anslyn studies the physical and bio-organic chemistry of synthetic and natural receptors and catalysts, and has been a pioneer in developing techniques and technologies (including the “electronic tongue”) to mimic the human senses of taste and smell.

We talked to him recently about his experience directing a research stream, on the chemistry of wine, in the Freshman Research Initiative (FRI).
