Women In Natural Sciences

Women in Natural Sciences

The Women in Natural Sciences (WINS) program at the College of Natural Sciences is designed to promote the recruitment, retention, and success of women at all levels throughout the College.

To accomplish this, WINS creates a supportive and encouraging environment for women in the study of science throughout their lives by:

  • Stimulating scientific interest and success of girls in grades K-12 through volunteer work in collaboration with local schools and organizations;

  • Supporting undergraduate women by offering first-year cohort programs and peer mentoring through the WINS Program;

  • Encouraging female students to pursue a post-graduate science education and to consider a career in academia; and

  • Working to increase the amount of female faculty representation in the College of Natural Sciences.

    The goal of WINS is to help establish the College of Natural Science at The University of Texas at Austin as a leader in the cultivation, recruitment, retention, and ultimate success of women in both the sciences and in academia.

    Although great progress is being made, women still earn fewer bachelor's degrees in the sciences than their male counterparts. Similarly, while nearly half of all PhDs in science and engineering nationwide are awarded to women, representation of female faculty remains low nationwide.

    By encouraging the love of science in school-aged girls and young women, and by supporting young women through their undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate studies, WINS ultimately aims to increase female representation in tenure-stream faculty positions.
