The Emerging Scholars Program
Student studying in classroomThe Emerging Scholars Program (ESP) is a challenging honors-level academic program for a select group of entering freshmen in the Colleges of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Business and Liberal Arts.

ESP is designed to provide students with an opportunity to study calculus and chemistry in a challenging but friendly environment.  A related, but more extensive, program is also available for select student studying biology.

ESP provides students with a collaborative problem-solving method that's designed to deepen your understanding of the subject.  Through ESP, students take a small, collaborative workshop in conjunction with their enrollment in either first-year calculus or chemistry, facilitated by graduate teaching assistants and student assistant who themselves are former ESP participants.  In these workshops, students have the chance not only to work with the content provided in their lecture, but to dig into more deeply.  This intense focus has created proven track record of success for ESP students, who on average do better in the introductory class than an average UT student.

Additional benefits of participation in ESP include:

  • Smaller discussion sections
  • More hours of organized study
  • ESP-specific advising
  • Dedicated student assistants to help you with your studies
  • Classrooms designed specifically to encourage collaboration
