On-campus interviewing takes place only during Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall recruiting season is held October through early November. Spring recruiting is held February through early March. Job descriptions and company information are available prior to the actual interview sign-up date.
Company Information Sessions
Many companies hold information sessions through Career Services. Check the home page for dates and times. The sessions are usually the evening prior to the interview date. You should dress nicely, but casually. Slacks and a nice shirt are appropriate for both women and men.
It is VERY IMPORTANT to attend these sessions if you would like to meet the recruiter and learn more about the company. The recruiters notice your absence if you are on their interview schedule. ANYONE may attend these sessions. Students are frequently added to the interview schedule at the information session.
Career Services Registration
Students who are "registered" with Career Services may participate in on-campus recruiting. Only students or alumnus of the College of Natural Sciences may register. Alumni and graduate students must pay a $10 per semester fee in order to register. Undergraduates pay this fee in their tuition.
Registration involves completing an on-line resume through the World Wide Web. This can be done in the Career Services office or on any computer with on-line capability. Since this resume will be your first contact with the company, remember to proofread for grammar, misspellings, and typo's.
Registering also enables you to log-on and get a listing of companies for which you are eligible to interview. You need to meet all company requirements; Career Services does not set the requirements.
You are encouraged to register with this office even if on-campus recruiting is over. Your resume will be sent to companies who contact the office daily.
NOTE: Please remember to register with the Career Resource Center each semester since the database is purged by semester. Register at the beginning of each semester to insure maximum exposure to recruiting companies.
Accessing Interview Schedules/Interview Appointments
Obtain a current interview schedule by clicking on "Pre-select/Interview Sign-up" which will display a list of companies for which you are eligible to interview. PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE EVERY COMPANY LISTED! Be selective and research the companies prior to selecting them. Click (choose) only those companies for which you really want to interview. By putting yourself on the pre-select list you have agreed to an interview if you are selected. This is only a pre-select list, not the actual interviewing list. Two weeks prior to the interview date, resumes of students who have "selected" a particular company will be sent to the company.
The Career Services office will email or phone the students selected by the company for interviewing a few days prior to the actual interview. Selected students should log back on and pick an interview time as soon as contacted. It is your responsibility to check your interview times through the web.
Interviews are generally 30 minutes in length and will be held in this office unless otherwise notified. Do not schedule back-to-back interviews since some interviews may run over. Dress professionally.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellation policies are strictly enforced. You are required to provide 72 hours notice to cancel an interview. If you fail to give proper cancellation notice, you are required to write a letter of explanation and apology to the recruiter and turn it in to this office to be mailed. If you no-show or cancel more than 3 interviews, you will be banned from all interviews for that semester and your resume deleted from the database.
Additional Tips
- Your resume will be given to recruiters who conduct interviews in this office if you are on their interview schedule. This resume should not replace a personal resume. You should bring your personal resume to the interview. We will not keep hard copies of personal resumes on file for you if you are an undergraduate. Graduate students may leave multiple copies of a vita or personal resume with Career Services.
- Be sure to ask the recruiter for a business card so that you can send a thank-you letter. It is very important to follow-up after an interview. It shows your continued interest and appreciation for the recruiters' time.
- Once your have obtained employment, please contact this office. Your resume will no longer be sent out to prospective employers thereby saving their time and yours.
