Counselors are available to discuss your options, the graduate school application process including when and how to start preparing. Advisors can also review application materials including résumés and personal statements and help you prepare for interviews and evaluate offers.
WORKSHOPS
Graduate School: An Overview for Science Majors
This workshop is designed for the initial exploration of grad school and may be best suited for those students who have not officially decided whether they are going to graduate school or which program is the best. The following questions will be addressed:
How do I know if graduate school is right for me?
What are my program/degree options?
Will an advanced degree help my career prospects?
When should I start the application process?
A brief sketch of the application process timeline will be presented with more detail to follow in the workshop entitled The Graduate School Application Process.
The Graduate School Application Process
This workshop is for the student who has decided to apply for graduate school and wants more details about the process. The presenter will go over the application timeline including when to start preparing for GRE’s or other tests, building a résumé, requesting letters of recommendation, drafting the personal statement, taking exams and getting scores to schools, etc. Presenter will suggest resources on how to get started on each part of the process.
Writing a Personal Statement
This workshop will discuss components of personal statements and provide examples. Students will be asked to write and discuss sections of statements for practice. Come prepared to share ideas!
The Graduate School Interview
This workshop will describe the site interview, including attire, arranging for travel, reimbursement, and the meetings with prospective advisors. The format is interactive, including role play of interview situations.
Preparing for Graduate School: It's Never Too Early!
This workshop will discuss the background grad schools seek in a student. Ideas about how the student can develop that desired background, through courses and experience will be offered. The presenter will also introduce a timeline with broad categories to set personal goals and advise students about opportunities to network with current graduate students.
