Recruiting Policies

Offer Period Duration Policy

As a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), Natural Science Career Services honors the NACE Principles for Professional Conduct, including guidelines for full-time (permanent) and internship offers of employment. The guidelines are discussed below; for more information, please visit the NACE website at http://www.naceweb.org/principles/default.htm.

We recognize that coming to campus to recruit our students is a significant commitment of time and resources and we believe following our policies will produce the best possible outcome for both students and employers. Candidates who are given sufficient time to thoroughly evaluate their employment options are less likely to renege on an acceptance and more likely to feel and speak positively about the company. In addition, they will complete more interview schedules, ensuring all employers equal access to the top talent during recruiting season.

In accordance with the NACE guidelines and consistent with UT’s Business School Career Services, we request that our students be given a minimum three-week period to evaluate any offer of employment without offer consequence. The offer window would commence on the date posted on the written offer.

Full-Time Offers (Permanent):
In addition to the minimum three-week period, we recommend that offers made during the summer or the fall recruiting season (Sept.-Nov.) remain open until the later of December 1st or three weeks after the offer date.
    -  For offers outside of the Fall recruiting season, we recommend that a candidate be given the time to make the            decision within a five month window of graduation (i.e., August 1st would be the decision deadline for a                    candidate graduating in December).

**We request your adherence to this policy even if the candidate has completed an internship with your company.

Internship Offers:
All internship offers should remain open for a minimum of three weeks after the date of the offer.
    - If you are extending a summer internship offer during the fall recruiting season, we ask that you consider                 following the permanent offer protocol delineated above. We want each student to have the opportunity to               participate fully in the recruiting season and make a thoughtful decision regarding their future employment.

This policy is consistent with the McCombs School of Business and you can find more information by visiting their website at http://fcc.mccombs.utexas.edu/employers/fcc_guidelines.asp.

Any recruiter attempting to place “improper influence” on students in making an employment decision will be considered to be in violation of NACE guidelines and NSCS policies.

If a student reneges on a written acceptance of employment, please notify our office immediately as we would appreciate the chance to educate him or her on the importance of professional integrity and the ramifications of unprofessional conduct.

No Alcohol During College Recruiting Policy

The Natural Sciences Career Services Office at The University of Texas at Austin is a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the association for human resources and career services professionals. As members, we abide by the Principles for Professional Conduct, an ethics document that serves as the framework and foundation for practices within the career planning, placement, and recruitment processes.

The Principles document tells us that serving alcohol to job candidates is inappropriate and inadvisable. The prin¬ciple states, “Serving alcohol should not be part of the recruitment process on or off campus. This includes receptions, dinners, company tours, etc.”

That means, having an open bar, a paid bar, or holding a recruiting event in a bar is inappropriate. Given the problem of alcohol abuse on college campuses, serving alcohol at a reception sends the wrong message. Further, many college students are younger than the state’s drinking age (21), and many college campuses now have a zero-alcohol-tolerance policy in effect. Therefore, serving alcohol could place your organization in violation of a state’s law and a school’s policy.

This memo is intended to demonstrate the Natural Sciences Career Services support of the “No Alcohol in Campus Recruiting” policy.

If you would like to read the Principles for Professional Conduct document in its entirety, you can find it on NACE’s web site, NACEWeb, at: www.naceweb.org/principles/principl.html.

We would be happy to discuss this matter with you. The staff of the Career Services Office hopes that you will also support the policy while recruiting with the College of Natural Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin.
