Ways To Get Job Experience

"Nothing is ever real until it is experienced" (John Keats)

Gaining experience outside of the classroom can provide students with an opportunity to apply, integrate, and evaluate the body of knowledge of a discipline or a field first hand, as well as allowing the student to acquire skills specific to a profession or occupation.
Internships, co-ops, research experience, volunteering, and part-time employment can all be considered
valuable learning opportunities.
All of these opportunities give students a chance to "try out" a field, possibly earn some money, impress an employer, make valuable contacts, and gain beneficial experience for a resume and future career.

Students are encouraged to participate in as many of these opportunities as possible!

Before you begin your search, you should ask yourself these questions:

What skills do I currently possess to bring to the position?
What do I want to learn or what skills do I want to gain?
Where do I want to gain this experience?
How much time can I devote to the experience?
How do I find these positions?

Career Services can help you answer these and other questions.

Workshops

See our workshop page for workshops that are scheduled.

On-Campus Recruiting/On-line Registration

Companies send representatives to campus during the Fall and Spring semesters specifically to interview students from the College of Natural Sciences.  In order to participate in the on-campus interview process, you must register with the on-line database, Experience.  Employers also have the capability to access the database themselves and search for resumes on-line.  Registration and interview sign-ups are facilitated through Experience and you can register via our web site. Detailed instructions are available on line or in our office.

Employer Contact Information

Current contact information of employers who have participated in on-campus recruiting, the Career EXPO or the Internship/Co-op Fair during the year is available in our library.

Career Services Library

Information on various national internships is located in the Career Services Library.  These opportunities occur every year and vary from working with the FBI to doing research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The library also contains books to assist students with their internship/co-op search.  Some titles include; The Big Green Internship Book, Directory of International Internships, The Resort Internship and Seasonal Employment Guide and Yale Daily News Guide to Internships.

Quick tips for a successful search!

* Start your search early! The earlier you start, the more options you will have.  If you know you want to intern in the summer, the fall semester is a great time to start looking for an internship.

* Research yourself.  Know what kind of businesses and organizations interest you.  Identify specific organizations that you would like to work for and identify names of people you can contact at that organization.

* Network!   Ask family, friends, and professors. You will be surprised at the opportunities that arise   from talking to people you already know.

* Utilize the Internet, there are hundreds of sites that list internship opportunities for your specific major.

* Remember, any experience in your chosen field, paid or unpaid is good experience!
