|Step 3 for Incoming CNS Students: Improve Your Score/Strengthen Your Knowledge|
Now that you’ve finished the initial ALEKS Math assessment, you should have a better idea of what topics to review. Keep your eye on the final goal: to prepare yourself for your mathematics courses at UT. Thus try to review as many topics as deeply as possible before the semester begins. (There will be enough new information to keep you busy during the semester.)
What are the minimum required ALEKS Math scores for course placement?
Every UT student enrolled in one of the below courses is required to obtain a minimum ALEKS Math score by midnight on August 25th of at least:
* score not required for M316 or SSC courses with credit of calculus or precalculus, SSC may use a previous ALEKS score of 30% or higher.
What if I do not obtain the minimum required ALEKS Math score for course placement?
If you did not reach the minimum score for desired course placement, you have two options:
You may self-remediate in an attempt to improve your score using the ALEKS and UT Learning Modules. You can also get help from your mentor-tutor on specific math topics. With this option you must still obtain the minimum prerequisite ALEKS Math placement score by 11:59 pm August 25th or you will be dropped and may lose your place in the course.
You may enroll in the prerequisite course. However, you are still strongly encouraged to use the ALEKS and UT Learning Modules, and CNS mentor-tutors to better prepare yourself for the prerequisite course.
Using your ALEKS Math score as a starting point, we recommend the following Learning Modules to help you self-prepare for your mathematics courses at UT Austin.
Placement does not guarantee success. Below is a list of the main topics covered in precalculus (M305G) with which you should be well adept when entering Calculus I.
After availing yourself of these resources, you will be more prepared to take a second UT Math Assessment Exam through ALEKS and place into your desired course.
Keep your eye on the final goal: to prepare yourself for your mathematics courses at UT Austin, and remember, placement does not guarantee success.
